  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Actuality:     Effectively a pointless collection of false memories and half truths, what began as an intention to provide my loyal reader with an assessment of Texas burgers disappeared into a miasma of Bourbon fumes and beer fog. In addition to the appalling descriptions which follow, I managed to lose photos of Braums Burger and Ice Cream and Pharmacy (which isn't even in Dallas, but the Assembly Food Hall in Nashville.

  • Descriptions:

    • Twisted Root - A pretty disappointing meal, despite having a signed poster of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives hanging over me - thanks Guy! - which was a shame as I liked the place in Deep Ellum. Amusing ordering, good to great beer selection, average burger and appalling fries, not a combination made in heaven. The burger was just OK, a bit of a melange without a composite falvour.

    • Whiskey Cake - Double patty of not particularly tasty meet in a bun that didn't last with OK salad and sauce which unfortunately overwhelmed the bun after a not very long period of time - just needed a bit of TLC and it would have been good. Fries were OK, had wine instead of beer - wine was very nice but also the top priced option (Austin Hope Cabernet in case you want to know).

    • Chets - I was fooled by the lack of Leprechauns into thinking it wasn't an Irish pub, otherwise I'd not have gone in, which would have been a shame. Everything about the burger was nice except whatever it was all over the bun - some kind of oil/fat something. The burger was OK, sauce nice, distinct cheese taste and good salad. Chips OK, and as a pub a good beer selection.

    • Sonic - The first time I'd visited a drive to burger join, a series of parking spaces and intercoms with no dine in option. I don't normally do chains, and this was an example of why not - nothing really memorable. No beer obviously, I was driving and they don't do it, so the fact I can't remember anything more than blandness and crunchy fries wasn't down to the normal reasons.

    • Easy Slider - Winner winner, baby burger dinner. Apparently in the top 10 burgers in Dallas, the Sweet and Lowdown (Goats Cheese and Strawberry Jam) was very good, all the bits tasting individually and delicious as a whole, although I would suggest less Goats Cheese as it was a bit overpowering. I also had the Roadside which was also really good - with actual crunchy bacon which sealed the deal. Yum yums all round.

    • Whataburger - Another chain, similar overall taste (or lack thereof) to the Sonic burger, also with good fries and no beer, but interesting in that the burger sauce is in fact only mustard, which isn't as bad as it sounds. Both Sonic and Whataburger aren't delicious, but they are fine, this just shades in any comparison

    • Finally - because this is Dallas, and not Nashville, Braums. Similar to Sonic and Whataburger it was better - possibly because it tasted less mass produced, especially the salad component. Again, good fries and no beer. How did I manage to drink too much I hear you ask? Mainly because these were all lunch time options is the answer, and I didn't write up the notes - hence the vagueness. One thing to note, whilst the saying is that "everything is bigger in Texas" that was only true in my opinion about the Ice Cream in Braums - the two scoop was huge, literally 100% bigger than I've had anywhere else and a challenge. Having said that, we also passed "the World's Biggest Wheelbarrow" (probably true), and "The World's Biggest Honky Tonk" in Billy Bobs (Fort Worth Stockyards), so there's maybe something in it.
