Steak & Honour

4 Wheeler Street, Cambridge

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Mess

  • Verdict:       I really wanted to like this, especially with a van to brick back story and good reps, but eventually I decided that it was too much. Too much like other offerings mainly, specifically Meat Liquor, but could be any over sauced and over messy burger joint, and that was my problem - between the sauce and the pickles there was very little other taste. Add to that the fall apart bun and it's a disappointment. Obviously this is a one off review, so anything can happen, which is a shame because it looks really nice and if you can find bits that aren't sloppy/covered in pickle/holding together, it's quite nice. Couple of niche beer offerings and some very good fries. Possibly controversial, but there you have it.

Wahlburger

8-9 James Street, Covent Garden

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Surprises

  • Verdict:       In all honesty, I wasn't expecting a huge amount from Wahlburgers, having a film star as a partner doesn't guarantee anything special - ask Planet Hollywood. In this case, I was pleasantly surprised and a little irritated. Having just been to what I hoped would be a great artisan burger joint in Steak& Honour and being a little let down, I wasn't expecting to have to make it worse by preferring a corporate offering in Covent Garden. As it happens, I do. Don't shoot the messenger. The good things about WB were the things I didn't rate in S&H; the bun held together and had a nice chew, the components of the burger were distinct and you could taste them. Obviously being more mass market, the meat was medium, but they still managed a nice crust and the texture was good, and the flavours were a little down (onions blanched), but it's a good burger and I liked it. There, I said it. Fries were OK - bit like the old KFC fries if they cooked them a bit longer, a bit chewy but not unpleasant, and a range of beers and wines as you'd expect.
