Original Patty Men

Digbeth, Birmingham

  • Purpose:     Burger assessment

  • Good for:    Hiding from shopping

  • Verdict:       Hidden down a back street not far from the Bull Ring, OPM is a little slice of Hoxton in the Midlands. Similar look and vibe, not a bad thing by any means - underneath the arches. Burger was a bit of a letdown, nothing really wrong with it - just a bit formulaic maybe. Looked good in a sloppy way when it arrived, good bun and salad, meat and cheese a little tasteless, and the burger sauce too similar to other offerings. OK chips and a nice selection of beers and ciders. I feel like I should be more impressed, probably going for the non-standard burgers would deliver more satisfaction.

Gourmet Burger House

Cleveleys, near Blackpool

  • Purpose:     Burger assessment

  • Good for:    Practicing crying ahead of another 2 point loss to a massive Super League side

  • Verdict:       In an effort to escape the brokenness of Blackpool, a side trip to have a burger seemed in order. In an unassuming shop fronted almost café, a little gem. It's not perfect, and probably the opposite of the Original Patty Men, but it just works. The burger patty was a bit flat - excuse the pun - flat top grilled, so no flame flavouring and a lightly industrial texture, but the rest was really nice resulting in a really good burger delivery. Everything tasted or what it was, cheese, salad, sauce, and came together well. Great crispy fries, small seleciton of beer/wine and a freiendly environment.

  • Burger:       If you're in Blackpool, hop on the tram..
