The South African Collection

On the plus side, I tried a number of good burgers in South Africa, and a number of not so good. Here are the 4 locations that I took photos of.

The down side is that I can't remember a lot about them, partly because I didn't write up the reviews when I should have, and partly because having been on the Wine Tram, tasting 7-10 wines at each of 4 stops, continuing onto a couple of pints at Boschendal and then a couple more at the Old Station pub (for example) isn't conducive to any kind of memory.

Viewing images from left to right we start with Tuk Tuk in Franschhoek (Tuk Tuk Microbrewery | Craft Beers & Globally Inspired Food | Franschhoek). The burger was very saucy as you can see, which was great for the average chips and effectively swamped the flavour of everything else. Not a bad burger, but not the best. A range of craft beers which are worth trying, but again, not the best. Verdict: Not the best.

Next up is the Old Bridge in Somerset West (BURGERS (oldbridge.co.za) which is here more because I like the place rather than the quality of the burger, which was just OK. Tasted better than it looked, bearing in mind I was hungry and had been out out, but not "amazing" as advertised. Due to the chips being South African, and therefore undercooked, I didn't bother so can't rate those.  As a pub/restaurant there were a lot of beers to choose from, so no issues there, and there are deals to be had for both food and drink. Verdict: Good value.

Next up is the best of the bunch, Franschhoek Frites (Home - Lets Frite), if only because the chips were excellent - triple cooked chips usually means made soggy 3 times, but in this case they were crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and actually tasted of potato. They also sold Stella which is a win for me although happily not uncommon in SA. As for the burger, I remember wolfing it down and a certain amount of dribbling, but no actual details. Bummer.

Verdict: Go try.

Last, but not least, what's actually a chain (Our Menu | RocoMamas South Africa), which I usually don't review - but as this is more of a flashback than a memory, I'll make an exception, basically because it was nice. The exception to the "too drunk to care" experiences so far noted, this was our last meal on the way to the airport. A few good beers on tap, again some good crisp chips, and a burger that tasted all round good without being exceptional.  Verdict: Cahin done good.
