Ghost Burgers

134A, Kingsland Road, London, E2 8DY

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Recovery

  • Verdict:       I was pretty tempted by the Wagyu related advertising, but disappointed overall - in addition to the lack of beer/wine. The base Cheeseburger comes without salad (gherkins, red onion & lettuce add £2 to the already high price of £11.00), but even with it costing £13.00 I'd advise it, because the basic issue with the "Classic" is that it's too greasy. I get that it's Wagyu, and Wagyu comes with a higher fat content and allegedly fat is taste, but it wasn't as tasty as you would hope and between the meat and the cheese all I got was a fatty residue over my tastebuds. It wasn't unpleasant by any means, just a bit annoying. I'd hope the salad would help with that, and enhance the overall taste. The chips were good, and came with sauce so you don't need to rder extras, word from the wise. Not sure I'd go back, but it was popular and the staff were good.

Truffle Burgers

206-210 Bishopsgate, London EC2M 4NR

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    People who like truffles

  • Verdict:       First up - confession. As the world's worst gourmand, I don't actually like truffles - which Truffle Burger encapsulates perfectly. The reason I don't like them is that I find them overpowering and actually not a great taste - this is 100% reflected in the Truffle & Parmesan Fries, where the topping is truffle on steroids. Root around like a truffle hunting piggie and you can locate fries below the top layer which are OK, but it's too late to taste anything else at that point. Luckily the burger isn't so aggressively truffled up, more a moderate garlic & truffle mayo which adds a reasonably nice tang and earthiness, which matches well to a good solid meat patty and brioche bun. It still totally overwhelms the pickle and lettuce, first time I've seen that happen to a pickle. Overall taste is good though, even to me. Lager was not good, one of two beer options, no wine, and anaemic sodas so avoid I'd say and go to Woodins Shades pub over the road. Obviously if you like truffles, you're onto an absolute winner here, and if you're not, have the burger - it's pretty good.
