Gordon Ramsey Street Burger

Islington, Angel actually - converted to GR Pizza weirdly, other locations ongoing, closest is Farringdon as of 26/07/2024

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Perhaps surprisingly, eating burgers

  • Verdict:       Having passed a GRSB in Piccadilly (previously a Byron), I was surprised to find there were 4 locations - almost triumphant in these times, and maybe a sign it would be good - and it was. The OGR (on the basis I only test Cheeseburgers) was a good choice. The bun wasn't toasted which I'm not wild about, even a bit cold, but that didn't last as it needed a good squash to allow even my admittedly capacious gob to get a good bit. The patty was densely textured, which I don't normally like, but was actually good - no char, but still managed flavour (I don't know whether the hint of middle eastern spice was meat seasoning or cooking where a lamb burger was last prepped but it was nice. There was a reasonable amount of grease, which left a post meal mouth feel which maybe let it down, but most dripped out during eating. This also made the bun soggy, but it didn't disintegrate. The salad was good, the cheese was tasty and tested, and the burger sauce was delicious. I'm not sure Pierre Koffman did skin on seasoned chips, described as Koffmann's Fries, but there were also good. A minimalist drinks selection didn't damage the visit, and £15 for burger & fries (and soft drink, which I obviously didn't have) isn't that bad.

  • Burger:        Not Boulod, but pretty good.

  • Cost:            ££££

Loaded Burgers

Loughton High Street

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Garlic breath

  • Verdict:       Another group of 4 locations, we visited Loughton on a quiet early Thursday evening and were reasonably happy. No alcohol, so I didn't bother with a drink - went to the pub after. Burger was very juicy, as in the bun became soggy quickly and barely made it to the end, one of those awkward last mouthfuls slipping around the remains of a bun moments. First impression was of the garlic mayo, which initially swamped everything else. I didn't really get the Cheddar taste, not that of caramelised onions or burger sauce which I also couldn't see. The patty was OK, no crispness or char, so not easy to assess. Chips were more chewy than crispy, which is odd as they weren't being held ready, not bad though. Having said all that, the overall impression was that it was OK.

  • Burger:        Uneventful.

  • Cost:            £££
