Blas Burgerworks

Food shack, under the Leadenhall Building, London (also the Sebright Arms currently)

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Using a knife and fork

  • Verdict:       Rarely has a review been so difficult. Some bits were easy, beer and wine selections short but sweet - the pale ale was pretty good - and the skin on fries were ropey, not crispy, a bit soggy. Some bit weren't. For starters, being open "5 'til late" shouldn't mean 21:00, it's not as if the place is quiet, they have a reputation for excellence and it was full at 17:30 and 20:55, even on Sunday. Weird. More divisive is the burger itself. As you can see, it's a bit of tower, which needs some squashing to make mouth sized - even mine, and I've been told I have a big mouth on many occasions. Unfortunately this forces aioli out the top and meat juices into the bottom, which results in messy fingers and a bun that disintegrates. In terms of taste, it ranges from the ordinary, blue cheese wasn't really a presence, to the good, aioli wasn't overly garlic and the salad crispy and tasty, to the frankly excellent beef patty. The patty was pretty pink, so initially I thought it wasn't going to be great, but I was wrong. Great chewy texture, great flavour. Go just for that.
