Fat Hippo

2-6 Shakespeare Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6AQ

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Newcastle

  • Verdict:       Disclaimer - I was a little inebriated following England's destruction of Samoa in the Rugby League World Cup, and we had to wait for a table, so it was pretty late. Details are hazy. However....   The fashion in Newcastle is for multiple smashed patties, so that's what fills this burger - good enough meat, no real char, in a brioche which was good and lasted well. The only fillings were mustard, ketchup and pickle (and cheese) so fairly classic, if a little dry. Cheese wasn't pronounced which let it down some. Fries cost £1 extra, hand cut chips come with. Unbelievable, charging extra for peeling potatoes, which they clearly don't do in house anyway. They were nice though. Good selection of bottled and canned beers, in a funky enough venue treading a good line between industrial and cool.

  • Burger:        OK

  • Cost:            £££

Meat Stack

41-43 Groat Market, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1UG

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Strange Coloured Beer. And Burgers.

  • Verdict:       Disclaimer: Although I wasn't inebriated, I got that way post this visit, so again the details are a little hazy. Also again, it's a smashed double patty event and again everything did their job. The bun didn't look like it would last but did, the patties were nice and juicy, the cheese a faint presence and the lettuce, well, probably the only one of my five a day that I actually had (unless Hops count). The overall impression was a bit of dryness, though that could have been me. The worst thing was the sauce, which was thin and runny but very nice - if it had been thicker and coated the burger it would have made it excellent, as it was it dripped off. I don't really love beef dripping chips, but the ones here were pretty tasty and crisp, and enough to share. Reasonable selection of beers - a couple on draught (including my orange one) and a couple of cans.

  • Burger:        Slightly better than OK

  • Cost:            £££
