Almost Famous

11-13 Parr Street, Liverpool

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Pleasant surprises

  • Verdict:       Thankfully, and without being regionalist, a littel surprisingly (not sure why - possibly because the Liverpool Echo seesm to equate size with quality in their reviews), a fine burger awaits in Liverpool. Double patty, which may have been too dense if it was one, tasted beefy, cooked nicely - teensy bit of pink left - in a bun solid enough to absorb some unnecessary juices. The burger was given additional height by the pickles and salad being very centered, which actually added to the enjoyment as it gave different flavour combinations to each bite (although you do need to have the ability to dislocate your jaw for the middle bits). Cheese was tasty, and although I didn't get bacon in the ketchup, there was a heat to the sauce which I enjoyed, quite spicy. Chips were a mix of sweet and normal potato, didn't really like that so much, but personal taste, and a good range of drinks. Good service topped it off.

Cult Burgers

105 High Street, Maidenhead, SL6 1EA

  • Purpose:     Burger Assessment

  • Good for:    Keeping pubs open #2

  • Verdict:       There's a common misconception that cult relates to hidden gems, appreciated by a select few initially, but as time passes they are recognised by the wider community for the greatness. Or a bunch of mad people/weirdos. This is the latter (although I've never appreciated "O Brother, Where For Art Thou" either, so...). I would normally have suggested that the food was to enable drinking in Tier 2, but it looks like it's an attempt at being a burger/chicken joint, so either a poor one or a great effort at disguise. In honesty, it was a couple of days ago, so I can't remember the burger details other than it was insipid - which memory issues apart tells me something - other than the patty being tasteless, the cheese more so, and the bun uninspiring. On the plus side, the fries were OK. At least as a pub the drinks were good - although in this case primarily via bottles/cans.

  • Burger:       For beer drinking purposes only
